Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) : for CW or pulsed operation from 750 to 1550 nm

Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) are offered as stock items or associated with a choice of low-noise CW or high-speed pulsed drivers. An SOA optical amplifier driven in CW or pulse mode operates as a full-range amplifier, full-range variable optical attenuator, a lossless high dynamic range amplitude modulator or an isolation switch. 

All these Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA optical amplifier) show high gain and high output power performances over a wide range of wavelengths.  CW or pulsed SOA+driver solutions in either open-frame or turn-key versions are described below (Scroll down !!). An SOA amplifier driven in CW mode is a smart alternative to classical EDFAs (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers). When driven in pulsed mode with our high end electronics, it can be compared with AOMs, EOMs or direct laser diode fiber modulators. It is the only solution meeting all the constraints for a reliable, stable and efficient fiber-coupled intensity amplification and modulation.

SOAs are sensitive to parasitic laser cavities. Especially a laser cavity can easily take place between a non-isolated input laser diode and the SOA. This must be avoided. It is recommended to add an isolator before and, sometimes, after the SOA. With this option, an isolator with FC/APC fiber connectors is provided at either 1064, 1310 or 1550 nm (depending on your SOA wavelength customer choice). The fiber is respectively PM980, PM1300 or PM1550. The isolation level is typically 35 dB, Insertion loss is typically <1.2 dB (max 1.5dB) for 1064 models or <0.35 dB for 1310 or 1550 nm models - The max optical power handling is 300 mW max. NOTE : for turn-key integrated modules, please specify if you want to have the isolator spliced within the product or supplied separately with its FC/APC connectors.
